1.
Kiss me with a simple touch, I don’t need anything From all I’ve lost, there’s nothing left to steal Nothing to repeat, the moment closer, sleep til you go from Close your eyes, and stay inside, until you feel alive Further from, your side Further from, the night Your lips are painted shut, taking shape under you Filing language with a glance, there’s nothing left to speak, and nothing to conceal What you wanted, only disappointment Echoes off the summertime, your eyes are not like mine Further from, your side Further from, the night Leave, you’re on your own And all you’ve got it time, the year falls like a stone And there’s nothing left to keep, the moment closer, sleep til you go from Close your eyes, and stay inside, til you hear the distant call
2.
It’s raining old love, bleeding all my new blood I’m wishing that the wall could talk The wall that separates, my mind In two halves, that don’t align Aren’t you, in love? Well, I don’t know I was in two pieces, and one was you then But I’ve been divided so many times I’m haunted by my foolish pride With each piece, that’s left, behind Aren’t you, in love? Well, I don’t know People say I don’t know? You’ve got time?
3.
Image of You 04:30
The image of you in my mind, wounded softly, stuck inside Watching paint dry, around the edges of life I’m a silhouette of foolish pride, moving slowly through the night Just to get to your side You’re too far gone The burden of proof was all mine, and I can still see both sides Should I give you up, or give up my pride? Darkness creeps in from all sides, but the sun bleeds out behind The image of you in my mind You’re too far gone You’re too far gone now You’re too far gone And it’s hard, you said, more than once you said, to be given something you don’t want And it’s hard, you said, more than once you said, to give up something you don’t want The loosest thread, pulled looser still, I’m still here and you’re still here To watch the paint dry Can you take the hurt, and all the pride, and put it all behind The image of me in your mind? You’re too far gone You’re too far gone now You’re too far gone
4.
Always Hurt 03:39
There’s a desolate border between what I want, and what I can have The good times were easy, and the hard times Were definitely more than I could bargain for A dog bit to the heart, a car crash of the mind Oh you got it bad, and you gotta get, rid of it You wonder what’s behind, wonder what’s behind, the behind? Remember your old life, with hearts on ice? In loves teeth, always on your back Now you’re left in blank space, where memory dwells And sunsets as sure as the sting of coming undone Oh you got it bad, and you gotta get, rid of it You wonder what’s behind, wonder what’s behind, the behind? You keep it to yourself, but you know that you’re leaving You wanna turn around, looking for a reason A tender arrow fired, into the hardest heart Where shadows of a doubt keep you believing That you’re always hurt and haunted by something You can’t define Oh you got it bad, and you gotta get, rid of it You wonder what’s behind, wonder what’s behind, the behind?
5.
Strange light and a subtle wind, combs across a summer’s day Kissing shadows in Hyde Park, stranger than the figures of art Sleeping on, in the cold light of dawn Trees of doubt, fields of stone Memories become our scars, drowning near the surface of your heart Caught in a gently riptide, a lonely cosmic divide Sleeping on, in the cold light of dawn Trees of doubt, fields of stone Two evils shown, in the cold light of dawn And you can’t hide, what’s inside, and you won’t No birds to ring the change Or lines to demarcate In your heart Sleeping on, in the cold light of dawn And you can’t hide, what’s inside, and you won’t
6.
The feeling fades, we take our time We turn our backs, on everything tonight There’s a loneliness running through our veins like ice Black city smoke, in our eyes Should we give it all? Should we give it all up? The kisses from our fever dreams, make us hard to please And hungry for the days that we’ll never find Will we live and die just to entertain The notions of a foolish game? Should we give it all? Should we give it all up? The feeling fades, we take our time We turn our backs, on everything tonight There’s a loneliness running down our face at night Black city smoke, in our eyes
7.
Walking on a bridge through town, are you sleeping between towns tonight? Is it written in the distance, send a straw to the surface, just to feel alright? I found you in a dream, you were to crass to cry, starlit abyss in your eyes Did you hear my distance call on your parents’ telephone, will I die out here alone? Trouble keeps coming up Do ya feel alright, have you got nothing to say? Do ya feel alright? It takes the ghost of these things, to wring the languor from trees, to wring the sound out of the night And I need to ask, “Do you feel alright?” You were the emblem of my youth and you selled so much truth when I told you in the parlor room At your parent’s lake house, one afternoon Trouble keeps coming up Do ya feel alright, have you got nothing to say? Do ya feel alright? Trouble keeps coming up
8.
When I wrote ‘Cruel Vestige’ I was still too young To know where I was coming from Knocking on the door of an empty house, for whom does that bell toll If not for I alone? Here’s some bad advice, let your mind go Like a stone’s throw to the mirror When I wrote cruel vestige I was feeling numb Heartbroken, full of cum The light went out if my heart’s a house, I was tired and alone Too old to care, what I could become Here’s some bad advice, let your mind go, like a stone’s throw to the mirror And what you thought you’d find, is already gone Just pale dimensions, coming true It’s nothing that I would know, it’s nowhere that I would go
9.
Soft tempers flare, over your sea of tears I’ve got in mind, something I won’t find here You say it all time Where will you go tonight? Too soon Parched pillows paired Drift into the sea, my sea of dreams You’ve got in mind Something you won’t find, won’t find in me Where will you go tonight? On you own, too soon On your own When you see it all, when you see it all When it’s gone, can you sing it off? Can you sing it off? When you see it all, when you see it all When it’s gone, can you say it all the time? You say it all the time Where will you go tonight? On you own, too soon On your own Too soon
10.
In dark summer, I let a strange thing, happen to my sense of self I flew out the open window, a specter high above the night Now the dark wood trim that frames my days Sleeps in the shadow Of something I I can’t find I’m the cat in your darkened chamber, soft and low across the floor To find you sleeping in the shadow, of the thing we can’t ignore And that lullaby is the distant sigh Of the thing that you can’t hide In dark summer From uncertain windows You’re the sunlight on the ruins, of the days that we move through To find my solemn statue at dusk, in the garden of you And that siren song is a lonesome one What was yours and what was In dark summer, from uncertain windows? In dark summer, from uncertain windows? In dark summer, sleeping in shadows Sleeping in the shadow

about

The Ocean in Films is a San Francisco indie-rock band, and the product of the multi-year musical collaboration of childhood friends Anders Carpenter and Daniel Hildebrand, both originally from North Carolina.

In 2015 the duo convened to exchange song ideas which they captured any chance they got in informal bursts of writing and recording. This iterative approach to composition gave the songs breathing room to stretch out and develop over time. Quickly a sound developed that blended a focus on sonic experimentation and orchestration with tightly honed song structures and abstract lyricism. It is a sound that calls to mind the chiming guitars and fractured pop sensibilities of R.E.M., XTC, Felt, Fripp/Eno, and The Go-Betweens.

In 2017 the duo entered the studio with Damien Rasmussen to record what would become ‘Cruel Vestige,’ the band’s first full-length album. The lushly detailed record was mixed by Larry Crane at Jackpot! Studios in Portland, and mastered for digital and vinyl release by Brent Lambert at The Kitchen in Carrboro. Cinematic in scope and sound, ‘Cruel Vestige’ looks to personal tumult from the past 10 years for inspiration to posit the question: Which is harder - being haunted by the past, or your own unwillingness to let it go?
